BILL BROWN I PRISON YOGA PROJECT
Prison Yoga Project (PYP) is a global nonprofit organization that has developed a holistic approach to rehabilitation and transformation within justice systems. Most incarcerated individuals have a history of complex interpersonal trauma, and conditions inside correctional facilities tend to exacerbate that pre-existing trauma. Violent and crowded living conditions combined with the stress of punitive segregation fail to solve, and often make worse, underlying mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Through trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness practices, PYP facilitators share methods that develop emotional resilience and positive community engagement. PYP programs are grounded in evidence-based trauma-informed yoga and embodied mindfulness practices, equipping individuals with the essential tools for self-discovery and personal growth.
Bill Brown began working with PYP in 2013, serving in federal, state and county facilities in Southern California. Through his work with PYP, Bill hopes to promote social change, transforming current systems and culture to create a more inclusive, equitable, and just world.
